About Japanese Name Generator
Japanese Name Generator helps you find a Japanese name and understand it: which kanji it is written with, how to say it and what the characters mean. People use it for baby names, characters in stories and games, pen names, and plain curiosity.
What you can do here
- Generate a name: pick a gender and a style, get a batch of full names with kanji, reading, romaji and meaning.
- Write your name in Japanese: type an English name and see how Japanese writes it in katakana, and which sources back the spelling.
- Browse 78 name lists: by gender, style, length, first letter, anime and history.
- Look up a name: 536 given names, with every kanji spelling we have side by side.
- Search surnames: a ranked directory of 1,983 family names.
Who is behind it
The site is written and maintained by The Japanese Name Generator team. We are not a government agency, a registry or a translation service, and we are not affiliated with the dictionary projects we credit.
We check the data with scripts and by hand, and we fix errors when readers point them out. We do not claim that every page has been reviewed by a native speaker; if you spot a wrong reading or a meaning that does not fit, tell us.
How we keep names honest
Every given name on a list or name page is either on our hand-reviewed list of 226 everyday names or listed as a given name, with that exact kanji and reading, in JMnedict. Meanings are built from what each kanji means by itself. How we check names explains the sources, the method and the limits.
