Privacy policy

Short version: you do not need an account, we do not sell data, and we use Google Analytics only to see which pages people use. You choose whether analytics cookies are set.

What we collect

We do not ask for your name, email address or any account. The names you generate on the site, and the names you type into tools on it, are processed in your browser; they are not sent to our servers. The name converter downloads a small dictionary file chosen by the first letter of the name, so our hosting provider can see that file name, which reveals the letter and nothing more.

If you accept analytics, Google Analytics 4 records which pages you view, roughly where you are (country and city, worked out from your IP address, which Google does not store), what kind of device and browser you use, and how you reached the site. We use this to see which pages help and which do not.

If you decline, Google Analytics still receives a basic signal when a page loads, without cookies and without a persistent identifier; Google uses signals like these to model overall traffic. Either way, we have turned off Google signals and ad personalization.

Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, sees your IP address and request details (page, browser, time) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. We do not use that information to identify visitors.

Cookies and local storage

  • _ga and _ga_… (Google Analytics): set only if you accept; they last up to two years.
  • jng-consent (your browser’s local storage): remembers whether you accepted or declined, so we do not ask on every page. It never leaves your browser.
  • No advertising cookies and no social-media widgets.

Your choices

Use “Privacy settings” in the footer at any time to accept or decline again. When you decline, we remove the analytics cookies we can reach and stop setting new ones.

You can also block Google Analytics with a browser extension or your browser’s tracking protection.

Who else is involved

Google (analytics) and Cloudflare (hosting and delivery). We also link to outside sites, such as the dictionary projects; their privacy practices are their own. How Google uses data from sites that use its services is described on Google’s site.

Email

If you write to us, we keep your message and address for as long as we need to answer and follow up, then delete them. Ask us to delete them sooner at any time.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under GDPR or California law), you can ask what data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to its processing. We hold very little (essentially only emails you send), but write to hello@japanesenamegen.com and we will reply.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

If we change this policy, we update the date at the top of the page.
