Common endings in Japanese boys' names
Boys' names often end in -ro (郎, a traditional suffix usually paired with a number for birth order), -ta (太, "thick, great"), -to (斗, 翔 or 人), -ki (輝, 樹 or 紀), -ya (也 or 哉) and -suke (介 or 助). Single-kanji names such as 蓮 (lotus) and 湊 (harbor) have been very popular in recent years.
Modern, traditional and samurai-era names
Taro ("eldest son"), Jiro ("second son") and Saburo ("third son") are classic examples of the -ro pattern. Modern names such as Ren, Haruto and Sota are shorter and often end in a vowel. Choose Traditional for the older style, or try the samurai generator for names from the age of the warriors.

Frequently asked questions
What does the -ro ending mean?
郎 (-ro) was traditionally added to a number or a name to mark a son, so Ichiro is the first son and Jiro the second. Today it is a classic-sounding ending.
Can I get names from the samurai era?
Choose the Traditional style here, or use the samurai name generator, which pairs warrior-age given names with clan surnames.
Do the kanji choices change the pronunciation?
They can. Different kanji may share a reading, and one kanji may have several readings. Each result shows the kanji together with the reading it goes with.
Can I generate only a first name?
Yes. Switch Name type to Given name to get first names only.
