Patterns in Japanese girls' names
Many girls' names are built from a few familiar parts. Endings such as -ko (子, "child"), -mi (美, "beauty"), -na (奈 or 菜), -ka (花, "flower", or 香, "fragrance") and -ne (音, "sound") are common, and nature words such as 桜 (cherry blossom), 葵 (hollyhock) and 雪 (snow) appear again and again.
Modern and classic names
Names ending in -ko were the norm through most of the twentieth century; Hanako and Sachiko are classic examples. Recent favourites tend to be short and bright, such as Yui, Hina, Rin, Mio and Sakura. Choose the Traditional style for the first group and Modern for the second.

Frequently asked questions
Can I choose modern or traditional names?
Yes. Pick Modern or Traditional in the style menu, or Anime for names with a more dramatic flavour.
Why are some names written with a single kanji?
Single-kanji names such as 凛 (Rin) or 葵 (Aoi) are popular because one character can carry a whole meaning and reads smoothly aloud.
Are the meanings exact?
Names do not have fixed dictionary meanings. The meaning shown summarises the usual sense of the kanji, and families may choose the same characters for different reasons.
Does the generator pick a surname too?
By default it generates a full name. Switch Name type to Given name if you only need the first name.
